How to write a resume

When applying for a job it’s important that you submit a well written resume- it is required. It is a tool that you can use to sell yourself to the employer.

What you’ll need:

  • A computer (to type one up)
  • Resume paper (nice paper to print on, use a white or ivory)
  • Internet access (for resume builder online)
  • Someone to proofread your resume!

Instructions:

1. Choose a font- plain text is best [don’t use underlined, boldfaced and italic text]

2. CONTACT INFORMATION: At the top of the resume provide contact information such as your home address, phone number and e-mail address. [employer can contact you this way] Hint: If you are have a current job, its best not to have prospective employers contact you at work unless your boss knows you're looking.

3. OBJECTIVE: Below "contact information" include an objective statement- Use clear, simple language to indicating what kind of job you're looking for.

4. EXPERIENCE: List your most recent and relevant experience first. Include time frames, company names and job titles, and major responsibilities.

5. EDUCATION/ACHIEVEMENTS/AWARDS: List your education, awards, or achievements (if applicable).

6. SKILLS: Inlcude skills you have that will prove beneficial for the job you’re applying to.

7. Now, proofread or have someone proofread it. Check any mistakes in spelling, grammar or syntax.

8. Limit resume to one page. Less is more!

Hint: Some job fields require a longer document called a "C.V." or curriculum vitae (for example, basic research positions, college level teaching jobs, healthcare professions.) This is a more detailed description of your work experience and duties. This is necessary because in these fields a job title and few word description doesn't adequately explain what you did. Hiring employers pretty much know what your job entailed if you were a "Bank Teller." But what does it mean to have been an "Assistant Professor?" What courses did you teach? In what field is your background and expertise? Did you also conduct research? What publications do you have? etc.

Tips:

  • Try to not use "I".
  • Don’t include your personal information, such as age, race, religious background and sexual orientation.
  • Print on nice paper!
  • Avoid mass emailing a response to online job ads. This shows you did not even take the time to consider if the job was a good match.
