How to choose a major
From LifePortal Content Wiki
So, you got in.......now what?
Depending on your school, you may or may not have to choose a major when you enroll. Eventually, everyone is faced with this commitment. Here are a few ways to start thinking about it.
- Why did you go to college? Did you have a specific career goal in mind? If you did, you might find a major tailored just for you!
- If you are not sure what you want to do yet, don't worry. You will have to take quite a bit of general education coursework for your degree and the benefit of this, in addition to the learning you do, is that you will be exposed to a lot of different areas. Some of them might interest you. Take another class....and see if it catches your attention.
- Majoring in more traditionally non-career oriented subjects is not a waste of time. Humanities and liberal arts subjects will help you learn to integrate knowledge, create context for future learning and provide a sound basis no matter what career you might choose in the future.
- Talk to your high school career counselor. Maybe you can take an assessment that will help you identify your strongest interests and abilities, which could help you choose one of the many paths available for your future!
