It’s tough to think about what a quality education is if you have never had one. In my community, youth settle for out of date text books, window less buildings, senile teachers, and useless classes. Having had an education in this district for twelve years I’ve had my ups and downs but I am now an honors student. Suddenly those things don’t seem to make a difference and I feel like I’m smart enough to move forward. Until I took the SAT and ACT tests and I realized DAMN...I’m not as smart as I thought. I didn’t get it, classes are a piece of cake but these tests are telling me that I’m dumb. What’s going on? That’s when I realized it’s not my fault that while our students are getting CASHEE prep classes rich white kids are getting SAT prep and help with college admission. This is when I realized that something wasn’t right. Our education isn’t the same. A quality education is when a person no matter their race, ethnicity, or financial circumstance can have equal opportunity to resources and tools to succeed.
Instead of rich predominately white students being the only people getting the top of the line education everyone should be getting it. Instead of outsourcing jobs we should be spending more time supporting people living in the United States with an education that sets them on the right track. Funding shouldn’t be determined by the property tax in the region of schools. All schools should be given equal and proper funding. Knowledge shouldn’t be just for the privileged. We deserve to get the same education as a kid who lives in the hill’s, we deserve the best and should demand it.
