What do you think about when you hear Ex-offender?? Now think about this Ex-offender living in your community. I attended a meeting that was held by ex-offenders. In my opinion, I think that people that have made mistakes in the past should not be labeled as criminals.
The members of the project “Coming Home” are trying to raise awareness in Richmond and in other communities of the difficulties that ex-offenders have to face. For example, many of our citizens have trouble finding homes or even a hot meal. Also there are many that don’t have the privilege to have a decent medical insurance. Our fellow citizens that recognized they made a mistake come back home looking for a job and get turned down because of their mistakes. Not only do they get shut down for the things they have done they also don’t get the opportunity to have that second chance that everyone deserves.
This group has been able to get many other people involved and now they are working to get the community’s support. I enjoyed being able to learn that mothers that have made mistakes in the past get the opportunity to be with their children thanks to these types of groups. I am excited and very interested to know what they have in store for the men who haven’t had the chance to be fathers to their children. With the work of all these people and many more I believe that this group will be able to create a change that will impact our lives in a positive way.
